Noah slipped Felicityâs hand in his as they stepped inside Barcade, music and flashing lights and the beeps and blips of countless classic arcade games greeting them. Something inside him relaxed at the way she curled her fingers around his, as though she wanted the contact just as much as he did.
He hoped they still had that punch out game. He felt the need to hit something after spending the past twenty minutes coaching Felicity on what to look for when dating another guy. The idea of her with someone else was enough to make his blood boil and froth in his veins, his pulse pounding dangerously in his temples. Which he knew made him an asshole of the first degree, because he wasnât offering her anything either. He wanted to keep her to himself. He didnât want to share her with the world. With strangers who might hurt her or use her or disappoint her. He wanted to shelter her from all of that, and yet he knew he couldnât, and it was shredding his insides into jagged ribbons.
The inside of Barcade was casual, with round wooden tables with metal chairs spaced throughout the bar, surrounded by different arcade games, all glowing brightly. With her hand in his, Noah led them toward an empty table in the back corner, which gave them a view of the Skee-Ball lanes nestled along the back wall. He pulled Felicityâs chair out for her and then sat down across from her, picking up the menu.
âThis is so fun,â she said, looking around, her eyes skimming over the lanes of games. âI canât decide what I want to do first.â
âAre you hungry?â
âYeah. And I do need fuel if Iâm going to school you at Asteroids.â
He leaned in, grinning at her. âBring it on, Hawthorne.â
She laughed, the sound rushing through him like a summer wind, leaving him feeling warm and light and happy.
âOh, it shall be brought.â
They ordered burgers and fries and beer and then did a sweep around the games as they waited for their food.
She gasped when they passed a bright yellow one. âCrazy Taxi! I remember playing this at the mall with my friends. I canât believe they have this.â
He held out his hand, gesturing for her to have a seat in the pretend taxi cab. âIâve never played this one, so youâll have to show me how it works.â
She hopped inside, her excitement palpable. She wriggled in the seat, getting comfortable and making Noahâs blood rush south. There was more of that innocent, oblivious sexiness on full display, making him want things he shouldnât want. Making him want to keep her instead of throwing her to the wolves waiting in the big city dating scene.
Noah turned and slipped a $20 bill into the nearby token machine, returning with a bucket full of shiny coins. He held it out to her, and she took one, popping it into the slot.
âYou know, you donât always have to pay for everything,â she said with a little shrug.
